The Queen had done some royal-looking hand-flop at my request to use the portal. I took the hand-flop to mean she didn’t care, so we hurried to the portal.

The Queen had given up, that much was evident. She thought that by saving Ciara and Susannah’s love, I’d cursed the entirety of Evermist to destruction.

She was wrong. Love should never be a casualty of any plan. There was always a way for love to win. If love had to suffer for our goals, then we had either the wrong goals, or we were utilising the wrong methods.

I faced the glimmering portal and adjusted the bodice of my glimmering lavender gown. Although the Queen hadn’t cared about us going to see the sirens, she’d begged me to put on a “decent” gown, otherwise she feared what they’d think of her hospitality during my visit.

So here I was in another uncomfortable contraption. But honestly, my fear of the portal exceeded my dislike of this frock.

Besides, this gown came with a pocket in the skirts, and I’d secreted the Queen’s lunethe into it. I still didn’t know why I had this thing, but I sensed it was important somehow.

The portal loomed before us. It wasn’t too long ago that I’d used one of these portals on Earth, to get to Evermist, and I’d immediately been separated from Charles, Lysander, and Tarin. Despite using the portal within the palace with Marek on my first day here, I wasn’t eager to do this again.

“We’ll really be with you, the whole time,” Tarin said. “Nobody’s going to separate us like last time.”

“How can you be sure?” I asked.

“Because you and I are going through like this.” He picked me up in his muscular arms and dashed into the glimmering lights.

I screamed, but the sound was lost in the swirling vortex. And before I knew it, my terror was replaced with wonderment, because we were at the sea. The scent of the ocean filled my nose—salt and brine and sand. Wind whipped at my hair and clouds rolled across the purple-grey sky. Before us was the ocean, grey and rolling with rhythmic waves. I’d never spent much time at the ocean before, yet I felt as if I had come home.

It was beautiful. Peaceful.

Strands of my brown hair caught in Tarin’s beard, so I tugged them free while snuggling against his chest. “You made it. You’re here with me. Where’s everyone else—?”

The air pressure changed briefly, and the other three guys appeared around us.

“There they are,” Tarin said.

He was still holding me, but when I wriggled, he let me slide down his body until I was standing. The contact between us was still electrifying. Last night had satisfied me completely, and yet, with these guys, it seemed I always wanted more.

“All right, that’s enough, you two,” Charles said, coming over and taking my hand.

Tarin frowned at him, and I stuck out my tongue.

“Do that again, pet, and I’ll find a good use for that tongue,” Charles warned.

I considered sticking it out again and saying, “Yes, please,” but we had work to do.
